NEWS: Our Target Areas: MOUNT BALDO
Mount Baldo is a long, narrow mountain ridge in northern Italy, stretching about 40 km along the eastern shore of Lake Garda. Thanks to its position and morphology, it is considered an unique ecosystem and many botanical species have the specific denomination “Baldense” – Baldensis.
Why are we focusing on this area?
Nowadays, biodiversity of the area is facing many threats, among which: spreading of alien species due to abandonment of grazing fields, raising temperatures, and loss of traditional botanical knowledge that leads to unregulated picking and trampling of endemic flora by both tourists and locals.
Interesting facts:
- HORTUS EUROPAE: Monte Baldo is often called the “Botanical Garden of Europe” with over 2,000 plant species, many rare or endemic like the Callianthemum Kernerianum, one of the target species of the project.
- 2218m: From the top, you can enjoy a rare view of both Lake Garda below and the snow-capped Alps in the distance — on a clear day, even higher peaks and the vast Po Valley might be visible!
- MICROCLIMATES: Due to its height and proximity to Lake Garda, Monte Baldo has a range of climates, from Mediterranean at the base (with olive trees and red lilies) to Alpine at the top (with Edelweiss and Anemonoides baldensis)— all within a few kilometers!
