NEWS: Our Target Areas: MOUNT KOMOVI

Mount Komovi is a mountain range in eastern Montenegro with the highest peak, Kom Kučki, reaching 2487m of height.
Komovi or the Komovi Mountains has historically referred to a formation of iconic peaks that tower above the small mountain settlement of Štavna. Marked by their impressive twin peak formation, this rugged massif is actually made up of three distinct mountains – Vasojevićki Kom, Ljevorečki Kom and Kučki Kom– as well as several smaller peaks which puncture the green foothills.

But why are we focusing on this area?
The uniqueness of Komovi Mountain faces serious environmental threats, most of which are caused by human actions, such as 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 and 𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Moreover, 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 and 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 add further pressure on both flora and fauna, leading to a 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.
Interesting facts:
  • ICE-COLD SPRINGS: Komovi is the mountain with most springs found above 2000 meters altitude. Black spring (Crni izvor), with a temperature of 2 degrees Celsius, is the coldest mountain spring on Earth.
  • ANCIENT PINES: At an altitude of 2,200 meters, there are centuries-old pines—Heldreich’s pine and Balkan pine—some of which are around 400 years old.
  • TEMPERATURE RANGE: Komovi is also unique because of temperature differences. During summer, the temperature may range from above 20 to minus 2 degrees Celsius in just one day.

Next we will present the target species each partner will focus on! Stay tuned!
