NEWS: International Mountain Day (11 December)
This year’s International Mountain Day arrives with a powerful reminder of why the world’s peaks matter more than ever.
This time around the focus proposed by the United Nations is on the crucial role played by glaciers, not only for the local communities living in higher territories but for the world as a whole. These frozen giants provide up to 60-80% of the world’s freshwater and the quick melting rates of the last decades cast a worrying shadow over the future of our mountains, their biodiversity and our communities. According to the United Nations, five of the past six years have seen the most rapid glacier retreat on record. Around 600 glaciers have already disappeared and many more are predicted to vanish as temperatures continue to rise.
This day is especially important for PROMONT and the partners working on this project because it reminds us, once more, why it is crucial to continue to choose action over indifference and commitment over detachment. This critical situation calls for us to do our part to make things work, not only for our well-being but as parts in our world’s complex mechanism.
